We’ve covered lots of topics on our blog about CBD and period pain, PMS, endometriosis and even fertility. However, one we haven’t covered is CBD and diabetes.
If you are a woman who not only suffers from painful periods but also has diabetes, you might be wondering, can you take CBD with diabetes meds? And whether CBD could have a positive impact on your symptoms.
In this blog, we are going to let you know whether you can take CBD when you have diabetes, and what, if any, might be the benefits.
CBD Oil and Diabetes
Diabetes is known as an inflammatory condition and CBD may help with inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Research has found that CBD may help to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation and improve blood glucose control.
The University of Nottingham conducted a study in 2016 which found that when CBD was used in conjunction with the cannabis compound THCV, it helped to increase insulin production and lower blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes. GW Pharmaceuticals is currently developing a CBD THCV spray which could help with controlling blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes.
It is believed that CBD oil activates CB1 and CB2 receptors, helping to encourage the body to produce its own cannabinoids. CB1 receptors are found in the brain, CB2 receptors are found in the immune system. It is the CB2 receptors that may impact pain and inflammation.
When these receptors are activated, the cannabinoid CBD can affect inflammation and pain perception.
Does CBD interact with Metformin?
Metformin is a medication to help those with type 2 diabetes. As cannabis products can interfere with medications, it is important that if you are using metformin and CBD, that you monitor your blood sugar.
