Why Choose Sleep Over Coffee | CBD oil for sleep

Have you been thinking about using CBD oil to help relax you into sleep? If you are drinking too much coffee, it can really impact your sleep, so it might be worth cutting down on coffee and trying CBD to help you drift off.

It’s no secret that coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant of the methylxanthine class. The stimulant properties will make you feel more alert, however, it can also have other side effects such as:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Jitters and anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Digestive issues
  • Fatigue

Here at Our Remedy, we love nothing more than our morning cup of coffee. No way are we suggesting you give up your cup of Joe totally. That’s not what this blog is about.

In this blog, we are going to suggest why you might choose to get some sleep rather than dosing yourself up with coffee, and how CBD can help. We even give some suggestions to help boost your energy in the afternoon without reaching for a skinny latte.

Is coffee the reason you struggle to get to sleep?

As we have covered, coffee contains caffeine, which is a stimulant. It blocks sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain and increases adrenaline production. If you are someone who struggles to get to sleep at night, then you might want to rearrange your daily coffee.

Caffeine lasts anywhere from 4-6 hours in our system and has a half life of 5 hours. This means that if you have 200mg of caffeine you will still have 100mg in your system after 5 hours.

One cup of regular instant coffee contains around 100mg of caffeine whereas a shop-bought coffee can contain as much as 200mg or more.

If you are drinking coffee in the afternoon as a pick up then you might want to consider some other ways to boost your energy, without impacting your sleep.

How to boost your energy without coffee

Do a little exercise

If you are desk-bound then it might be frowned upon to get up and start doing your own little HIIT session. However, a little movement can go a long way. Try a walking meeting or even just some stretches at your desk.

Get more sleep

Okay, so if you are falling asleep at your desk by 3pm you might need to get a little extra sleep the night before. If sleep is something you struggle with, whether you have had coffee or not, then consider CBD oil which is said to help to reduce stress and anxiety levels which can help you catch some Zees.

Eat well

It’s tempting when you are tired to reach for the high sugar snacks. However, these are just going to put you on the sugar train and it is pretty hard to get off it once you’re on. Instead opt for healthy snacks, such as nuts, fruit, rice cakes and peanut butter. That sort of thing.

But you love coffee?

We’re not suggesting you go caffeine free. But, maybe you could have your last cup of coffee before lunch, which should see you through until the afternoon. You could always opt for a fruit tea or even a decaf coffee if you are missing the taste.

Why is sleep more important than coffee?

health benefits of sleep

Getting a good night sleep helps boost your mind and improve your mood. It can even help to prevent health problems. As women, we are more likely to suffer from insomnia and other sleep issues due to changing hormones, pregnancy and menopause.

Sleep plays a role in our physical health. When we have an ongoing sleep deficiency there is a link to increased risk of high blood pressure, illness, stroke, kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes.

It is also linked to obesity due to the way sleep helps you maintain a healthy balance of hunger hormones. Having too little sleep increases your ghrelin levels, which is why you feel hungrier when you’re tired.

Sleep also has a role in our mental health. Having too little sleep can cause you to have trouble making decisions, controlling emotions and solving problems. There’s even been a link between lack of sleep and depression.

Lack of sleep mixed with PMS symptoms seems like it could be a recipe for disaster!

If you lose just a couple of hours sleep a night in a row for a week or more, your ability to function properly can suffer, as though you haven’t slept for a day.

That’s a crazy thought isn’t it?

It’s pretty clear that if you lose sleep, you’ll risk your health, feel hungrier and maybe even have a low mood. Sleep’s important.

Our friends at Vape and Juice have made a great video into how CBD can help you get to sleep.

But I can’t get to sleep, even without coffee!

If you are struggling to sleep even having given up coffee then you might want to try a few other things. You might try:

  • Meditation before bed
  • A regular bedtime routine and ritual
  • Avoiding high-intensity exercise late in the evening
  • CBD oil before bed to help relax you into a deep sleep
  • A warm bath
  • Lavender oil on your pillow
