I’ve been on HRT for five years now, ever since my hysterectomy in 2019 at the age of 30. Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that I bruise more easily, but it wasn’t until recently that I really questioned it. It all started when I read Mad Honey, where a character on HRT mentioned bruising as a side effect. That got me thinking—does HRT make you bruise more?
After looking into it, I think the short answer is yes. But, of course, it’s not that simple. It could also be linked to menopause itself.
For me, I think part of the issue is that I’m naturally clumsy. I’ve always been that way, but menopause seems to have added an extra layer of clumsiness, almost like a physical side effect of brain fog. More bumps and knocks inevitably mean more bruises. So, while it might not be the HRT directly, it could be a combination of factors linked to menopause.
Another reason bruising increases during menopause is because your skin gets thinner (goodbye, collagen… I miss you!), making it easier to bruise. Again, this might not be caused by HRT itself but rather a result of menopause. If you’re taking HRT to manage menopausal symptoms, you might assume it’s the cause when it’s actually just part of the bigger picture.
I even made a TikTok about ‘Does HRT make you bruise more‘ – you can literally see my bruises!

Why Does HRT Make You Bruise More?
The main reason I suspect HRT plays a role is that it can thin your blood, and thinner blood means easier bruising. The same thing happens when you drink alcohol, your blood thins, and you wake up with mystery bruises after a night out. (Or is that just me?)
Other Symptoms You Might Notice on HRT:
You Sweat Less
A common symptom of menopause is hot flushes and night sweats. Since HRT increases estrogen levels, it can reduce these symptoms for many people. I’ve also heard that CBD, especially our Moon Swings formula with clary sage, can help with hot flushes.
From my personal experience, I definitely sweat less on HRT. In fact, I’m just not a sweaty person anymore. It’s a running joke on girls’ holidays… I can easily leave the house without deodorant, no problem.
Weight Gain
Many people complain about weight gain on HRT, and I get it. I’ve definitely noticed a podgier stomach that’s harder to shift. If you’re struggling with weight loss, I wrote a blog on losing weight after a hysterectomy, which is basically weight loss during menopause—it might be worth a read.
I also take biotin supplements, which could help boost metabolism. Worth a try!
So, do you think HRT makes you bruise more? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
