What Is Magnesium?
Magnesium is a natural mineral and found in dark green, leafy veg. It is known as an ‘essential’ mineral as you need it for bones, joints, healthy muscles and blood sugar levels.
As a mineral, it is mined from the earth. FUN FACT: Did you know the sea contains trillions of tonnes of magnesium?!
If you don’t have enough of magnesium in your diet, you’ll know about it! You can also be at risk of health complications such as heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and diabetes.
Magnesium is found in food such as eark leafy greens, nuts, seeds and beans but most people don’t actually get enough of it (around 50% of people, in fact!)
It is actually one of the few food supplements that we can make medical claims around as they have been proven and approved by food standards agencies.
So essentially, magnesium is a natural mineral that your body NEEDS.
How cute are the illustrations of it on our packaging!
What Are the Benefits of Taking Magnesium?
Magnesium is one of seven of the essential minerals your body needs to function properly. It’s most important job is to regulate enzyme function.
Wondering what enzymes are? Enzymes help speed up chemical reactions in the body, these chemical reactions are what keeps us alive. Over 300 of enzymes in our bodies need magnesium to do their job properly.
Pretty important, huh!
Personally I love magnesium for sleep and bone and joint health as I have experienced surgical menopause in my 30s, and it caused me to start sleeping quite badly. Here’s a few other benefits:
- Bones and joints: Its vital for bone structure and bone density, we need magnesium as we age
- Sleep: Magnesium is a natural sedative and may help you get a deeper and more restful night’s sleep so you should wake up with more enrergy.
- Heart health: Magnesium is thought to help healthy heart rythm and also keep your cholesterol in check
- Ease stress: It’s thought to help with cortisol levels, which means you should feel less stressed when you take magnesium too
- Headches: This study looks at how magnesium may help with headaches
What Dosage Should I Take for Maximum Effect?
Finding the right dosage of magnesium is very personal, and important! It really depends on your height and weight and how you usually take to things. I know that I am 5 foot 5 and 8 stone, so would need a little less than someone who is 6 foot 5 and 16 stone.
It also depends if you are taking it in powder or capsule form. Our Capsules are 200mg of magnesium citrate which is the daily recommendation for women. If you are taking magnesium citrate capsules you can take between 200mg – 400mg a day. So you can take up to two of our magnesium capsules if you wanted to, but one should be fine.
It’s important to get an accurate measurement – if you take too little, you won’t feel any effects, and if you take too much, you may experience adverse side effects. Additionally, some people need to take more or less than the recommended dosage to achieve the desired result. It is best to consult your doctor or healthcare provider to determine what exactly is right for your individual needs.
How Long Does Magnesium Take To Work?
When taking magnesium, you may be wondering how long it takes to see results. While it will vary depending on your individual needs and other factors such as age or the severity of symptoms, there are some general guidelines for when you can expect to start seeing the effects of magnesium.
On a personal note, I feel like I get the effects of magnesium pretty quickly. It is known to be a natural sedative and I definitely notice this. I take 1-2 capsules at night time and it makes me sleepy. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and take one to get me back to sleep. So personally, I feel magnesium has an effect pretty quickly.
Answer: How Long Does Magnesium Take To Work…
There is evidence that magnesium works very well for sleep which you can read about in this study. I find it works really quickly for sleep, and I get lots of feedback from customers too, saying the same.
After One Week
After one week is when people mostly report seeing the positive effects of magnesium, if they have been taking it everyday.
After 30 Days
If you’ve been taking magnesium for 30 days or more you should really notice positive effects. You may have less period cramps, better sleep and be feeling calmer. You may find by now your bowel movements are very regular too. You should be feeling more rested and have more energy each day.
After Three Months
You need to take magnesium consistently to continue getting the benefits of magnesium as your body absorbed magnesium every day, so you need to maintain your levels. Then after 3 months you should be feeling pretty great from the magnesium you have been taking.
How To Maximise Effects Of Magnesium
To maximise the effects of magnesium, it is important to understand the right dosage and timing. Start with a low dose and gradually increase it as recommended by your healthcare provider or a qualified herbalist, until you reach the full benefits.
I start with one capsule a day and I take it in the evening right before I go to bed, as I like the impact it has on my sleep.
It is also important to remember that magnesium works best when taken daily. 70% of the magnesium in your body is expelled within 24 hours, meaning you do actually need to take magnesium supplements every day to really feel the benefits.
Finally, as with any supplement, there can be side effects from taking too much magnesium, but it isn’t very likely. As such, it is important to begin with small doses and only increase as your body gets used to the supplement.
I now take 1-2 x 200mg capsules in the evening and only experience the positive effects.

In conclusion, it’s important to remember that everyone is different and everyone’s body will react differently to magnesium.
