Low Sex Drive After Menopause | 3 Ways to Help

Low sex drive after menopause is about more than just losing interest in sex. In my opinion, it’s your body’s way of telling you that something is off and needs attention. When you start to get your sex drive back after menopause, it’s not just about intimacy, it’s about regaining your spark and feeling more like yourself again.

Personally, I wouldn’t say I’ve struggled with low sex drive after menopause as such, but I recently started taking testosterone and noticed a big difference. Not only did it increase my sex drive, but it gave me a little extra “spark”, an internal boost that feels really good. It’s so much more than simply wanting sex.

If you’re experiencing low sex drive after menopause, here are three things that may help.

1. Ask for Testosterone

In the UK, women can only be prescribed testosterone for low sex drive. Frustratingly, there isn’t much research into the wider benefits for women, it tends to only be researched when it impacts men (that’s a whole other topic!).

But here’s the thing: low sex drive after menopause often means more than just not wanting sex. It’s about that “va va voom” that makes you feel alive.

Your GP will usually run blood tests first, and results may come back “normal” or “in range.” I found this frustrating too. My testosterone was technically “in range,” but right at the low end. It made sense why I wasn’t feeling great.

I pushed for treatment anyway (let’s just say unhappy partners and strained relationships are can be seen as reasons for low libido). Eventually, I was prescribed testosterone, and the improvement has been noticeable.

2. Try Supplements

Some natural supplements can support libido and overall wellbeing:

  • Maca root – Often known for fertility, but it also boosts libido. Think of it as something that simply makes you want to do the deed more. That’s why it can help with low sex drive after menopause.
  • Magnesium – Great for relaxation and easing tension. It also supports hormone balance and can be an all-round powerhouse mineral. If stress or tension are getting in the way, magnesium may help. We love magnesium for menopause, you can read more about that here.

3. Address Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness after menopause can make intimacy uncomfortable, reduce sensation, and contribute to low sex drive. Thankfully, there are options:

  • Pasterone pessaries – Prescribed by my GP, these oily pessaries mimic the DHEA hormone and help everything function more smoothly again.
  • Coconut oil – Works as a natural option, though I wouldn’t recommend relying on it long-term.
  • Topical oestrogen creams – Can improve comfort, sensation, and potentially bring back some of that spark.

Final Thoughts

Low sex drive after menopause isn’t just about sex. It’s about you, your body, your confidence, your sense of vitality. You don’t have to suffer in silence or accept it as “just part of menopause.” There are solutions worth exploring.
