menopause and bloating

Hey, I’m Steph!

I’m a qualified nutritionist and Rachel has asked me to write a little something on menopause and belly fat as it is one of the biggest issues her community face, and I know from experience how much the food you eat can help this.

Chances are, if you’re reading this, you are dealing with menopause and belly fat… that stubborn belly fat that appeared overnight that you just can’t shift.

Your body might be changing, but you’re not powerless.

Food is your most accessible, immediate tool for feeling better, and I’m going to explain exactly how to use it.

Now is the time to start really working with your body, nurturing it and giving it what it is needing. Time to leave behind the fad diets and deprivation, now it is all about truly nourishing your precious body through this next milestone.

The NHS lists it as one of the (many) menopause symptoms

The Hormonal Perfect Storm

Let’s get real about what’s happening in your midsection. This isn’t about willpower or eating too much cake (though we’ll talk about that too).

During menopause, oestrogen levels plummet, and your body starts storing fat like it’s preparing for winter – except winter never comes.

But here’s the kicker: it’s not just about oestrogen. There’s another hormone playing havoc with your waistline, and it’s one you have some level of control over.

The biggest mistake I see women make is thinking they need to eat less during menopause.

“The biggest mistake I see women make is thinking they need to eat less during menopause.”

Actually, you need to eat smarter – more protein, better timing, nutrient-dense foods that support your changing hormones rather than fighting against them.

Your Stress Hormone is Making You Store Fat

Cortisol, your stress hormone, is like that friend who overstays their welcome. A little bit is great, but when it’s constantly elevated (hello, menopausal stress!), it literally tells your body to take in more glucose (cue sugar cravings) and then store fat specifically around your middle… so called visceral fat.

Here’s the vicious cycle:

You’re stressed about menopause symptoms > cortisol rises > you crave sugar and carbs > blood glucose spikes then crashes > more cortisol is released > more glucose release & belly fat storage.

And round and round we go.

Breaking the Cortisol-Fat Storage Cycle

Ditch the Coffee Chaos! I know, I know – coffee is life. But if you’re downing multiple cups and wondering why you’re wired but tired, and your waistline is increasing, it may be time to get more caffeine conscious. Cortisol and caffeine are best friends, and together they’re sabotaging your fat storage.

Try this: Limit yourself to one cup before 10am, and switch to herbal teas later (chamomile is a great cortisol calmer). Your stress hormones (and your sleep) will thank you.

When you do enjoy a cuppa, try and have it with some protein or fat to help ease the release of caffeine into your system. A handful of nuts of even a good splash of whole milk should help.

The Processed Carb Trap – A Menopause and Belly Fat Mistake!

That innocent piece of toast, the afternoon biscuit, the “healthy” granola bar – they’re all sending your blood glucose on a rollercoaster ride.

What goes up must come down, and when it crashes, cortisol rushes in like an overzealous paramedic, telling your body to release more glucose which inevitably gets stored as fat “just in case.”

Your Menopause and Belly Fat Action Plan

  • Protein at every meal (aim for a fist-sized portion) to slow the release of glucose into blood
  • Variety of fibre-rich brightly coloured vegetables to create a ‘mesh’ to slow glucose absorption (aim for 3+ plants per meal)
  • Healthy fats like avocado and extra virgin olive oil to keep you satiated and to prevent glucose spikes
  • Reduce the % of carbs at each meal to help prevent a glucose spike, always opting for the ‘whole’ version.
  • Avoid late night eating which can trigger unwanted cortisol spikes in the night

The Magnesium Miracle for Cortisol Control

Here’s your secret weapon against stress-induced belly fat: magnesium.

This mineral is like nature’s chill pill – it directly counters cortisol’s fat-storing effects by calming your nervous system and improving your body’s stress response.

Most menopausal women are deficient in magnesium (stress depletes it faster than you can say “hot flush”), so loading up on magnesium-rich foods is like giving your cortisol levels a much-needed timeout.

Magnesium Powerhouses to Add Daily:

  • Leafy greens like spinach and Swiss chard – go for the darkest green ones you can find!
  • Nuts and seeds, especially pumpkin seeds and almonds
  • Avocados (double win – healthy fats AND magnesium)
  • Dark beans like black beans and kidney beans – great base for meal prepping
  • Dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher) – yes, this counts as medicine!
