10 Things I Do To Help With Bloating – That Actually Work!

I’ve suffered on and off with bloating for YEARS. I eat reasonably well, so I know my bloating isn’t just about “stop eating junk food”, my body clearly needs a bit more than that.

So here are 10 things I do to help with bloating, in case they help you too.

1. Magnesium Citrate – The Easiest One!

Magnesium citrate is known for giving your digestive system a gentle kick. If I’m feeling really bloated, I take 2 before bed. It helps things move along overnight, a total game-changer for bloating.

2. Eat more fibre

My go-to breakfast is usually an omelette. To make it more “bloat-friendly,” I throw in fibre-rich goodies like spinach, tomatoes, spring onions, or chilli mushrooms.

Lunch is all about salads for me, packed with veggies. My favourite dressing is Greek yogurt mixed with a Nando’s-style spicy sauce. It adds flavour and protein from the yogurt, which is a win-win for help with bloating.

3. Pineapple – a tasty digestive helper

Pineapple contains a natural digestive enzyme, so it’s a sweet way to give your digestion a little boost. I love making a smoothie with spinach, cucumber, celery, coconut water, ginger, lemon, and pineapple. It’s delicious and genuinely helps with bloating, I’ll share the recipe below.

4. Drink plenty of water

I aim for at least 2 litres a day. I know it sounds counterintuitive (doesn’t water make you retain water?), but staying hydrated actually helps reduce bloating. I like adding lemon for extra digestive benefits and because it tastes nice!

5. Digestive enzymes with meals

I prefer pineapple as a natural digestive enzyme, but I also keep digestive enzyme supplements handy. If bloating is really bad, I’ll take one with every meal to help my tummy do its thing.

6. Probiotics before food

Taking a probiotic first thing in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast, can make a huge difference. (Yes, that includes coffee,or tea, in my case!) Supporting your gut health consistently really helps with bloating over time.

7. Switch to green or mint tea

Milk in any form, cow, almond, oat, tends to make me bloated. Switching to green tea with a hint of mint can feel cleaner and gentler on the belly. I don’t love green tea naturally, but mint makes it easier to enjoy. This swap alone has helped me feel less bloated on a daily basis.

8. Cut back on salt

I love salt. Give me crisps, chips, or any deep-fried cheesy snack, and I’m happy. But too much salt causes your body to cling to water, which means bloating.

Even small amounts on eggs or salads can add up, so cutting back has helped me massively. Greasy food falls into this category too, I avoid it whenever I want to help with bloating.

9. Slow down when eating

I’m guilty of eating at my desk, scrolling emails, and checking my phone while eating. But your body actually needs to see and focus on your food to digest it properly.

Take your time, chew slowly, and really enjoy your meal. Eating should be a pleasure, not a multitasking nightmare. I know this one is tough, but it works!

10. Stick to water and herbal tea – no fizz!

I love a diet fizzy drink, but my belly absolutely does not. I usually reserve fizzy drinks for the occasional treat, like the morning after too much wine.

Flavoured water or herbal tea are far gentler on the tummy. Cutting out fizz makes a noticeable difference if you want help with bloating.

I didn’t say help with bloating would be fun, did I? But trust me, these tips have genuinely helped me.
