Probiotics are often called good or friendly bacteria. You can find them added to yogurts and those tiny drinks everyone was buying in the late 90s. You can also buy them as supplements. Not all bacteria is bad, some bacteria may help digest food, destroy disease-causing cells and keep you healthy.

The idea behind probiotics is to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut. This can be disrupted by things like antibiotics, illness, and medications.

5 Reasons We Use Probiotics

  1. Banish UTIs

When we heard that probiotics have been considered for the prevention of UTIs, we got excited by this being one of the benefits of probiotics. I mean, no one enjoys sudden trips to the toilet only to pee out satan himself. Taking a daily dose of probiotics really helped to reduce the number of UTIs over the year. Phew.

If you fancy looking at the study we found, here it is.

  1.  For gut health

Poor gut health can display in different ways. For us we found the common symptoms of poor gut health were sugar cravings, unexplained fatigue and sluggishness, feeling anxious, bloating, and sleep issues.

Other symptoms that might be linked to gut health include:

  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn
  • Poor immune system
  • Stomach aches
  • Depression/low mood

By taking a daily probiotic we found that over time, we could feel our gut health improving as the symptoms started to subside, one of our favourite benefits of probiotics. I mean, we’re of course still partial to a chocolate bar now, but it isn’t so much of a sugar craving situation.

  1. To help with mood

It’s true what they say, you are what you eat. Your brain and gut are intrinsically linked. Feeling down, and also dealing with GI issues like bloating and wind, made us think that there could be something in this.

Writing on the gut and brain connection, Health Harvard explains, “A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut.”

It makes sense when you think about it. Big presentation coming up, nervous poo incoming. Feeling anxious, stomach is in knots and you can’t eat. You can easily see how it works the other way round too. So when our gut isn’t functioning optimally, it can send signals to our brain and make us feel down. This is one of the benefits of probiotics we can get on board with!

  1. Prevent yeast infections

Everytime we take antibiotics we can be sure that there’s a yeast infection in the post for us. This is because antibiotics kill bacteria, including the healthy bacteria in your vagina, causing a build up of yeast. We found that taking a dose of probiotics every day and wearing loose fitting clothing really helps prevent yeast infections.

  1. Sleep better

Stomach aches, a sore itchy vagina, needing to wee every 5 minutes because of a UTI, feeling anxious and depressed really impacts our sleep. With probiotics helping us to ease these issues we are sleeping easy, and staying asleep. We should also give a shout out to our good friend magnesium here too, as our daily dose of that certainly helps us get some shut eye.

The Pro in Probiotics

The great thing about taking probiotics is that they aren’t meds. For us, we haven’t noticed any negative side effects like we might get from taking lots of medications, another one of the great benefits of probiotics.

The NHS writes, “…for most people, probiotics appear to be safe. If you want to try them, and you have a healthy immune system, they shouldn’t cause any unpleasant side effects.

We can only speak from our own experience, if you’re thinking of taking them, you can always talk to your GP or healthcare provider.
