The birth control pill is a medication. So it is right that you check can I take CBD and birth control pill, just as you should with all of your meds.
There are hundreds of different contraceptive methods out there, some progestin-only and others a combination of estrogen and progestin.
Contraceptive pills are the most commonly used method of birth control proved by US and Australia-based studies.
Birth control with synthetic hormones, such as the pill, can cause a feeling of anxiousness in some people, according to Healthline. If you are taking CBD because of your birth control induced anxiety, then you will definitely be interested in whether it is okay or if you’re just swapping one problem for another.
Does CBD impact the pills effectiveness?
There is some thought that CBD could possibly cause a decrease in an estrogen-based pill’s effectiveness. This, of course, could lead to an unwanted pregnancy.
Why we are suggesting that, is because there is a study showing that cannabinoid compounds fail to stimulate estrogen receptors in vitro conditions at very high concentrations but CBD competes with estradiol (naturally occurring estrogen) and impedes its proper working.
Moreover, CBD has shown some side effects towards liver and Liver is responsible for more than 50% of estrogen metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes which modulate and regulate estrogen metabolism in the human body.
There is some evidence of cannabinoids interacting with cytochrome P450 enzymes present in the liver. So, when you think about it and join up the dots, it’s all logical to think, it might alter the effectiveness of estrogen-based pill.
However, research is still really early on for the studies and facts on this. It is just a suspected interaction at this point because there is no solid evidence. I’ve been trawling the net for you, and there are companies looking for volunteers for studies, but as yet, nothing is concrete as to how CBD and birth control pill impact each other.

Another thought is how it may also be a reason for more frequent breakthrough bleeding. This may be due to anticoagulation effects of the CBD proved by research, but also this can also be caused by forgetting to take your pill (guilty!).
What are other birth control options when taking CBD?
Progesterone only pills are said to be a more reliable option if you are using CBD and not looking to start or extend your family.

Although research into this is vague at best, it is always best to be cautious. You could speak to your doctor about the option of using progesterone only pills.
Progesterone’s primary role is to prevent ovulation and resulting in a decrease in luteinizing hormone. Luteinizing hormone when increased causes egg release from the ovary. Read here
You may also consider the non hormonal coil or condoms. As it doesn’t have any impact on your own hormones, CBD shouldn’t interfere. However, check with your own Dr.
If you are happy with your contraceptive pill and have found one that works for you, then you can still take CBD and birth control pill but after consulting your physician only. Be cautious and think about tracking your cycle to really get to know your body. This way you can notice ovulation signs and use extra protection around that time, such as condoms. With condoms as well as the pill, you will have extra protection.

Can I take CBD and birth control pill?
Yes, you can take CBD with the birth control pill but not all pills. However, there is some concern that CBD may decrease the effectiveness of the estrogen-based pills, so use it with caution. You could switch to progestin-only pills, or get to know your body and cycle for ‘safe days’ using an app such as Natural Cycles.
What other factors could affect the pill’s effectiveness?
- Medications you are taking
- Forgetting to take the pill
- Natural supplements
- Being overweight
The overall CBD effectiveness needs more and more research before a scientifically proved case is put forth whether it is safe to use or not to use with your birth control.
Therefore, it is best if you consult your doctor and get their opinion if you’re worried.
