TLDR: Becky shares her selfcare hacks for busy mums that you can fit into your day very easily.
As mums, we donβt get a huge amount of time to ourselves.
I’m Becky. βm a mum of two girls, one at school plus hobbies and one at nursery. I have a full-time job, a dog to walk, water to drink, exercise to do, and dinner to eat. My social life is kids’ parties.Β
Like so many mums, Iβm busy.
When I do sit down, someone needs a wee, or a drink, or something to eat.
Chances are, if youβre reading this blog post about five-minute self-care hacks for busy mums, your life is pretty similar.
The thing is, we need to take care of ourselves. We canβt fill from an empty cup, after all.
But how when we usually only have five minutes?
Five-minute selfcare hacks for busy mumsΒ
- JournalΒ
Take five minutes to write down some notes from your day. No pressure, no expectation. It might not come naturally at first, but the more you do it, the easier it will get. You could go a step further and write down goals, manifestations, and gratitude.
- Get organisedΒ
This little hack has given me back 10 minutes in the morning. Before I go to bed, I set up two coffee cups, two cereal bowls, the correct spoons (VERY important), the supplements we take, and a clean milk bottle. I also prep the clothes for the kids the night before. In the morning, this saves me so much stress and time. While itβs not a massage or a face mask, itβs like a little gift to my futureself. The wrong spoon can really set me back in the morning.Β
- ReadΒ
I set myself a goal in 2024 to read 12 books. With my daily reading, Iβve made it to 23 β so far! Every day I read for a minimum of five minutes. I even read in front of the kids when theyβre having lunch or playing. I think itβs good for them to see me reading rather than scrolling on socials. Pick an easy read if you arenβt a natural reader, or something known as a page-turner. Immersing yourself in a world is a great little escape! Books in diary format or poems are a good starting point because you can easily dip in and out. Try these: Where Rainbows End, Letters on Motherhood, and Nobody Told Me.
4. Take your supplements
Taking your supplements takes a little as 30 seconds a day, and it is a little gift of wellness you can give yourself amongst the chaos of life.
5. ExerciseΒ
You might be wondering how much exercise you can do in five minutes. Well, Iβll tell you. You can do a mini HIIT, yoga, stretches, and pilates moves. All of these you can do while the kids are home; no gym needed. Think squats while the kettle boils, lunges while the kids eat breakfast, and sun salutations after dinner.
6. Listen to your favourite songΒ
I love putting some old-school sing-along songs on in the car. Recently, I found an entire CD case from the early 00s. My quick car journeys to the shop or nursery drop-off have become a real energiser and trip down memory lane.
7. Fresh airΒ
Whatever the weather, get outside, open the windows. Let the fresh air flow into your lungs. Spend 5 minutes feeling the sun on your face, the rain on your cheeks. Take some deep and healing breaths. Itβs like magic.
8. Have a showerΒ
Let the water flow. Invest in your favourite products. If you have time, squeeze in a face or hair mask! Lock the door ; )
9. Declutter a drawerΒ
As busy mums, weβre easily overwhelmed. For me, clutter adds to that feeling. Take five minutes to declutter a cupboard, drawer, or toybox. Itβs therapeutic.
10. Lie downΒ
Sometimes, you just need to lie down. Think savasna.
11. Go to the toilet in peace
I donβt know what it is, but as soon as I go into the toilet, everyone suddenly needs to be in there. Itβs okay to draw a boundary at the toilet door. Lock the door. Take a few extra minutes to wash your hands, maybe put on a little moisturiser!
Thereβs my five-minute hacks for busy mums.Β
Never feel guilty about taking some time for yourself. Whether itβs five minutes or five hours, you need to restore and re-energise. Thereβs nothing worse than feeling depleted and these minutes can really change the game.
