A Spoonie is someone who suffers from a chronic illness. The day to day struggles of life can be shown using the “spoon theory”. Chronic illness can mean anything from fibromyalgia, MS, Crohn’s Disease, cancer, COPD and more.
CBD for spoonies is becoming more popular as the cannabinoid helps with various symptoms of an illness.
What is the “Spoon Theory”?
The spoon theory is used to explain the reduced amount of mental and physical energy available for those living with chronic illness or disability.
The spoons represent a unit of measurement to show how much energy the person, or spoonie, has throughout the day. Each activity requires a certain number of spoons, which can only be replaced when the person rests.
Where did Spoon theory come from?
Christine Miserandino wrote about the Spoon Theory in an essay in 2003. In the essay, she describes a conversation with a friend when she is asked “what is it like to live with Lupus”.
In the essay she writes:
“ I explained that the difference in being sick and being healthy is having to make choices or to consciously think about things when the rest of the world doesn’t have to. The healthy have the luxury of a life without choices, a gift most people take for granted.”
She then gave her friend a bunch of spoons. She told her she has Lupus and asked her to describe her day, from the very start when she opened her eyes.
Her friend starts to describe waking up and getting out of bed. Christina takes one of her spoons. As her friend goes through her day she quickly loses spoons before she’s even mentally left her house. Christina explains how she needs to rest in order to gain more spoons.
“We went through the rest of the day, and she slowly learned that skipping lunch would cost her a spoon, as well as standing on a train, or even typing at her computer too long. She was forced to make choices and think about things differently. Hypothetically, she had to choose not to run errands, so that she could eat dinner that night.”
The spoon theory is used by “spoonies” to explain to others what life with their condition is like. To help them to understand why they cancel meetups at the last minute or have to choose between tasks, rather than do them all.
